Six Community School of Arts student musicians won a $250 scholarship at the end of the Honors Recital on Saturday.

Twenty musicians auditioned in front of judges from the NIU Community School of the Arts in January. The judges selected six performers to play at the Honors Recital based off the individuals’ performances and talents.

“Each performer was able to pick their own audition piece as long as the piece stayed within the time limit and [was] considered challenging,” said Deborah Booth, director of external programs. “The time limit for the junior performers was five minutes and for the seniors was eight minutes.”

Christine Ryzhov, 12, is a violinist and the daughter of professor Victor Ryzhov from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry. She played Tambourine by A. Gretry at Saturday’s event.

Chance Hostetler and Leo Thomas O’Malley are two of the senior-level musicians who performed. Hoestetler, 16, performed Bethena by Scott Joplin.

“I’ve been playing the piano for six years now,” Hostetler said. “My parents inspired me to play and I [have] stuck with it ever since.”

O’Malley, 15, played the first movement of the “Concerto in G minor” by Max Bruch on violin.

“I’ve been practicing on this piece for almost a year now,” O’Malley said. “I have been working on it for an hour every day.”

William Jiang, Alyssa Leston and Allison Kozinski also performed.
