DeKalb officer put on leave after hit-and-run accident
February 24, 2013
A DeKalb police officer has been put on paid leave following claims he was involved in a hit-and-run incident, according to Police Chief Gene Lowery in a Friday Daily Chronicle article.
Officer Darrick Wesson is charged with leaving the scene of an injury crash, DUI and improper land usage. Leaving the scene carries the most severe penalty. If convicted, Wesson could face up to three years in prison for such an offense, according to state law.
Wesson was allegedly driving down South Malta Road when he struck a pedestrian walking down the road’s shoulder with the passenger side mirror of his Ford pick-up truck. The victim was transported to Kishwaukee Hospital with non-life threatening injuries, according to the release.
“I take these allegations extremely seriously,” Lowery said, according to the Daily Chronicle. “If these allegations are founded, they are going to have extremely serious consequences.”
