Prepare your car for the rough winter weather
January 29, 2013
Driving in snowy weather is never fun, but it’s important to be prepared for the worst case scenario.
“Have things in your car in case you get stuck,” said TJ Moore, DeKalb’s director of public works.
DeKalb Police Lt. Jason Leverton said the most necessary items include things like an ice scraper to make seeing a possibility.
“Windshield washer fluid that is also an antifreeze which can cut through ice and snow is important,” Leverton said. “People start driving with ice and snow still on their cars, unfortunately, and having the antifreeze helps with visibility.”
Having an extra blanket to leave in the car is also a necessity, but Leverton said there are other things to include: a tool to dig out snow in case you get stuck, snow boots, a coat, a scarf, a warm hat, some sort of communication device, light source and an extra change of clothes are all on Leverton’s list.
“People think they don’t need to dress warmly because they will be warm in their car,” Leverton said.
Moore thinks it is also very important to keep up to date with vehicle maintenance, as well.
“I really encourage people not to let their guard down,” Moore said. “It is very important to be aware.”
Moore doesn’t think this winter is over and encourages people to keep alert and have at least a basic level of preparedness. Leverton said everyone should have a first aid kit in his or her vehicle regardless of the season.
“Many people have front-wheel, four-wheel, or all-wheel drive which can get through the snow and ice,” Leverton said. “But it still takes extra time to stop.”
Leverton’s advice for anyone who does get stranded is to call for help and stay in the car.
“Sometimes people leave their car and that can be very dangerous,” Leverton said. “There is ice, but also most people aren’t wearing reflective clothing and they would be very hard to see by other drivers.”
Leverton said the best idea is to wait for the assistance to come.
