Eastern Illinois University has been awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Education for its efforts in support of student veterans, according to a Tuesday news release from the Illinois Department of Veteran’s Affairs (IDVA).

EIU was selected for the award in part for its hosting of a veteran’s transition workshop, its aid policies for students who enter active service during an academic term and for its Veterans Service Office.

“They [EIU] are making lasting and tangible commitments to helping veterans overcome challenges in education,” said IDVA Director Erica Borggren in the release.

Previous award winners include NIU, the College of DuPage, Western Illinois University and Southern Illinois University at Carbondale.
