Student Spotlight: Heather Setzer

By Logan Love

Every Tuesday the Northern Star will share the story of a student. Interested in suggesting someone? Send an email with the student’s name and contact information to the editor at [email protected].

Heather Setzer is a junior history major. She transferred to NIU in fall 2011 after receiving her associate’s degree from McHenry County College.

Northern Star: Why is history your major? What influenced your decision?

Heather Setzer: Indiana Jones sparked my interest, but I have always liked history. It’s interesting.

NS: Are you involved in any activities? What are some of your hobbies?

HS: Greek life. I am a member of the Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. We do a lot of charity work for our philanthropy, especially Sigma Serves Children. The program was created after one of our presidents lost their child to polio.

Also, reading, writing and just being a nerd.

NS: Tell me something very few people know about you.

HS: I’m a street teamer for local, unsigned bands. We help out with selling merchandise during shows, passing out fliers and stickers, helping them book shows, and some of us, not many, write lyrics for them. Basically, we do whatever we can to get the band’s name out since they’re unsigned.

NS: What is your dream plan for the next five years?

HS: Get my bachelor’s degree, move to Poland and get a T.A. position while I continue my education. After I get my master’s I might return to the U.S. to start work toward a doctorate.

NS: What has been the most rewarding aspect of your college career?

HS: The most rewarding part of my college career has probably been getting my associate’s degree while working two part-time jobs, working for my dad, babysitting and being a street teamer.

NS: What is one thing you would like to try before you graduate college?

HS: I would like to go skydiving. I’m an adrenaline junkie. It sounds like fun, you know, one of those things you have to do before you die. It would be awesome to study abroad, to see different countries, lives and culture. There [are] different “worlds” out there and it’d be really neat to experience them.

NS: What is one piece of advice you would give to fellow students?

HS: Don’t procrastinate, and do your homework.
