Jefferson, Corral named NIU Scholar-Athletes
December 4, 2012
This week, senior defensive tackle Nabal Jefferson of football and sophomore guard Amanda Corral of women’s basketball were named the NIU Scholar-Athletes of the Week.
Jefferson played a big role in helping the Huskies win their second consecutive MAC Championship, when the Huskies defeated Kent State, 44-37 in double-overtime.
He led the team with nine tackles, including 1.5 tackles for a loss.
Jefferson along with the rest of the defensive line did a good job of containing an explosive running game, facing backs Dri Archer and Trayion Durham.
Combined Archer and Durham only totaled 87 yards. On the night the Huskies held the Golden Flashes to 70 total yards rushing.
The accountancy major carries a 3.781 GPA.
Corral made her return from an ankle injury that kept her out of the last two games. In her first game back, she helped lead the Huskies to their first home win of the season over Loyola, 67-63.
She scored 19 points, pulled down four rebounds and had an assist and block in her first game back. Corral shot six of 13 from the field. She was strong down the stretch at the free-throw line as she went four for four in the last minute.
Corral’s 19 points were her season-high and just two points shy of her career-high.
She holds a 4.0 GPA as a major in health sciences.
