Comics makes for great holiday gift

By Jen Weddle

If you’ve ever ventured out to buy holiday gift for a comic book fan, you’ll soon realize that it’s practically impossible to search through the endless stacks in comic book stores to find that perfect present. Here are some comic book gifts you should consider buying that special someone for the holidays.

Comic book readers usually buy comics every week, so they already have a growing stack in their midst. Why not consider buying them a book instead? Marvel Comics: The Untold Story by Sean Howe might be one to consider. It’s a behind-the-scenes historical account of how Marvel, an underdog, became a multibillion-dollar enterprise. It’s packed with over 100 interviews with past and present Marvel insiders. This one will definitely be at the top of my Christmas list, and it can be purchased on Amazon.com for $17.12.

Who doesn’t love the Peanuts gang, including Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and many more? Cokesbury.com has a Charlie Brown Christmas Kit with a book and tree for $7.16. This might be a perfect stocking stuffer for anyone who loved the Peanut comic strips. Many people love Charlie Brown’s sad, pitiful Christmas tree and his ability to teach us the true meaning of Christmas, so why not give this gift to someone and spread a little holiday joy?

Ever since I was a little girl, one of my favorite movies was The Nightmare Before Christmas, so you can imagine my excitement when I learned they combined two of my favorite things: Jack Skellington and comics. Jack is the pumpkin king of Halloween Town. He’s tired of scaring people, so he decides he wants to kidnap Santa Claus (Sandy Claws, for those who have seen the movie) and almost ruins Christmas for everyone. For the first time ever, fans can read Jack’s Christmas story in manga form. This one will possibly sell out quickly, but you can find The Nightmare Before Christmas (Manga) on Amazon for $8.99.

How about a gift that keeps on giving? If that special someone loves Marvel comics, consider getting him or her the Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited subscription for a month or a year. Marvel has over 10,000 digital comics to choose from, and a yearly subscription for $59.88 or a one month subscription for $9.99 can be purchased from Marvel.com.

Most comic book fans would rather be sipping eggnog and reading one of Marvel’s Holiday Special comics, so if there are people like that in your life, get them something they will cherish on the holidays, and keep spreading that comic book love.
