Firefighters team up with local tavern for annual chili cook off

By Northern Star Staff

DeKalb firefighters and Sullivan’s Tavern are hosting their second annual chili cook off this month.

The cook-off will take place at Sullivan’s Tavern, 722 E. Lincoln Highway, at 2 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 25th. Entering the contest costs $25 and contestants are required to bring two to three gallons of their recipe. The last day to enter is the day of the event.

“We usually have a Red Cross representative because they are the benefactors,” said DeKalb firefighter Noah Millard. “We also have a member of the Tavern because they donate the prize money. The third judge has not been confirmed yet.”

The event will be host to three guest judges. Last year, NIU Head Coach Dave Doeren was the final guest judge. These judges will rate the chili from one to 10. The chili with the highest score will win. Prizes include $125 for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third place. The patrons will also be able to try the chili for $5. Raffles will be held, with prizes including for meat trays from Imbodens, 1106 N. First St., and other items. All proceeds go to the DeKalb County Red Cross.
