NIU to host documentary on Israel
November 5, 2012
The Israel Education Center will be showing a free documentary at NIU, according to a flier for the event.
The documentary is Voices from El-Sayed and it will be shown from 5 to 7 p.m. in Wirtz Hall, Room 101. The director of the documentary, Oded Adomi Leshem, is flying from Israel to introduce the film and stay after for a discussion and to answer any questions about the documentary.
The documentary is about a young boy who lives in a village south of Israel in the largest deaf community in the world. A doctor comes and offers for people to visit and receive cochlear implants. The young boy’s family accepts the offer and gets the cochlear implant for the boy.
It becomes a cultural shock in the community, and the boy is looked down upon for it. The documentary focuses on the boy’s everyday routine after getting the implant.
Sophomore finance major Daniel Gethner said he thinks showing this film will help students learn about other cultures.
“I believe by watching this students can learn a little bit about different cultures around the world and step away from their day to day life,” Gethner said. “Especially if they do not have disabilities of some sort or know anyone who has a disability, and be able to better understand people that are different from them.”
