“Amazing, as always!”
This was the reaction from long-time Phil Vassar fan and Ottawa resident Karen Szypura after Vassar’s concert at the Convocation Center on Saturday.
Before Vassar hit the stage, the audience was treated to opening act Back Country Roads.
This was the first arena performance the band had played, which made it an exciting experience for the members.
“I’m totally amped,” said Kyle Miller, lead singer for Back Country Roads, before the show. “Not nervous, just excited.”
When it was time for Vassar to hit the stage, the audience was not shy, eagerly showing their excitement for the artist to perform. He is known for being very energetic on stage.
“He’s an entertainer—a lot of fun to watch,” said Rockford resident Margaret Clutter.
Vassar, a country icon who is known for writing songs like Little Red Rodeo (performed by Collin Raye) and Don’t Miss Your Life, performed an impromptu set list of many of his original songs. Even though Vassar did not have a set list planned, he was able to go through his performance without a flaw.
“That’s the mark of a really good artist, that he can do a set list on the spot like that,” said athletic training major Nick Lowry.
Vassar got the audience members up on their feet, dancing and singing along to his songs.
After the performance, Vassar autographed CDs and even took the time to talk and take photos. The audience members ranged from first-time concertgoers to people celebrating their 30th Phil Vassar concert. All around, the country artist was a crowd pleaser.
Vassar said he had a great time performing for DeKalb and the NIU community. He said one of the best parts of performing in DeKalb was the audience. “People were singing along,” he said. “They were really fun—a good bunch.”
