DeKalb Fire Department offers tips for safe holiday season

The DeKalb Fire Department (DFD) released a series of holiday safety tips on Monday in hopes of keeping DeKalb fire free this season.
The DFD’s list of holiday fire prevention tips were created to protect DeKalb residents from the dangers of holiday fires, which cause millions of dollars in property damage each year, according to a Monday news release.
Fire prevention is a key factor in holiday safety, and simple steps can help prevent tragedy, according to the Fire Department.
Maintaining holiday lights and checking for worn or heated wires can help prevent fires, while properly caring for live Christmas trees will ensure a safer home, according to the Fire Department.
The DFD also advised in the release for citizens to avoid lit candles, and overloaded electrical sockets as they are prone to starting house fires.
Not disposing of wrapping paper in a fireplace is another way help prevent emergencies, as the paper can throw off dangerous sparks and burn quickly, according to the Fire Department.
