DeKalb Fire Department hangs red wreaths for fire prevention awareness

By Northern Star Staff

The DeKalb Fire Department has started its annual Red Wreath Program in hopes of quelling holiday incidents.

The program, which began in 1986, is designed to focus on fire and home safety during the holidays, according to a Monday news release.

The wreaths, which were hung outside the three DeKalb fire stations on Thursday, will stay on display until Jan. 1.

Each wreath was lit with all red bulbs when it was put on display. Every fire incident or fire emergency the department responds to during the season will result in a red bulb being replaced with a white one, according to the release.

The goal is to keep the wreaths red for the holidays.

Last year, the department responded to 455 requests for emergency services during the 39 days the wreaths were displayed. Of those calls, none were directly related to the holiday season, and the wreaths were kept red, according to the release.

Any questions or requests for information regarding the program can be directed to the DeKalb Fire Department at 815-748-8460.
