Downtown Dekalb, Sycamore to host Trick-or-Treating for children
October 23, 2012
Discover Sycamore and Re:New DeKalb will both be holding trick-or-treating events for children this week. Children will be able to dress up in costumes and trick-or-treat at various businesses in both cities.
Discover Sycamore businesses will be hosting their Downtown Trick or Treat event today from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The event will be used as a kick off to the 51st Annual Pumpkin Fest.
During the event, the businesses will be giving out candy provided by Nestle and other promotional items.
Discover Sycamore Director Lauren Diehl said the main goal of Discover Sycamore is to have their businesses have more interactions with the residents of the area.
“Discover Sycamore is all about connecting businesses to the community,” Diehl said. “This event provides the community with the opportunity to trick-or-treat in a safe way and many greatly appreciate it.”
Along with the trick-or-treating events, children will be able to drop off their decorated pumpkins on the courthouse lawn from 4 to 9 p.m. and take part in a giant cake cutting ceremony at 5 p.m.
The Downtown DeKalb Spooktacular event will take place on Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m. Lindsey Engelsman, Re:New DeKalb’s marketing and special event coordinator, said the event is always a favorite for the city.
“This is our 15th year hosting the Spooktacular event,” Engelsman said. “It really allows the kids to have a safe trick-or-treating experience and it’s a lot of fun.”
Along with the trick or treating event, children will have the opportunity to get the opportunity to make seasonal crafts at The House Cafe, 263 E. Lincoln Highway. A kid friendly preview of the Amenti Haunted House at the Egyptian Theatre, 135 N. Second St., will also be available for the participants.
“All the lights will be on in the haunted house and no actors will be present,” said Derek Gibbs, the Egyptian Theatre’s membership and marketing director. “Parents and children will have a ‘bite sized’ tour of the haunted house with out the scarier rooms.”
