Arthur Doederlein’s life to be remembered on campus this week

The life of Arthur Paul Doederlein will be celebrated on campus this week, according to NIU Today.

The professor of communications died at the age of 70 on Aug. 24 in DeKalb. He had retired from NIU by 2010, according to NIU Today. The celebration will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 in the Holmes Student Center’s Duke Ellington Ballroom. Food and refreshments will be served throughout the event.

According to NIU today, Cathy Doederlein, NIU coordinator of internships for the humanities, said this event is intended to be a celebration of her dad’s life and his devotion to NIU students.

Doederlein joined the NIU faculty in September 1969, according to NIU Today. His wife Sue had also joined the faculty as the associate dean for undergraduate affairs for the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Doederlein’s daughter Cathy and his son Arthur Allen Doederlein will speak at the celebration. Jim Solberg, lifelong friend and professor emeritus from Purdue University, will also speak at the event. Other speakers who will attend the event include alumni Mark Pollock, Robert Helstrom and John Butler, who is a NIU Board of Trustees member. Leroy Mitchell, retired director of the CHANCE program, will speak at the event as well.
