Delta Zeta wins 6th consecutive Tugs championship

By Erin Kolb

The Delta Zeta sorority won their sixth consecutive Tugs championship against Alpha Phi on Saturday.

Tugs takes place in the fall for sororities and in the spring for fraternities, said Mike Wahlund, Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity member and host of the event.

Wahlund said the men’s Tugs tournament in the spring semester is different than women’s Tugs because there are one or two more people per rope and the matches are longer.

“There is more of a level playing field in men’s Tugs, but in sororities some of the teams are just obviously better than the other,” Wahlund said.

Wahlund said he expected Alpha Phi to be in the championship round.

“In Alpha Phi’s first match against Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Phi pretty much handled them pretty soundly,” Wahlund said.

Wahlund said he was pleased with the turnout of the tournament.

“Pretty much every fraternity and sorority came out to support the cause,” Wahlund said. “It was a very connective atmosphere for all of the people here.”

Janine Laverdiere, Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority member, said she attended the Tugs tournament to support her sorority.

“I wanted to tug this year, but I got hurt,” Laverdiere said. “I like doing athletic things and thought this would be fun to try.”

Laverdiere said Tugs looked intense based on the way she’s seen her sorority training for it, and she would like to do it next year.

“After we lost, I didn’t really care who won anymore,” Laverdiere said. “It would be nice for Alpha Phi to win because they’re the underdogs here, but I know Delta Zeta has been working really hard, too.”

All proceeds from the event went to breast cancer research.
