Women’s Soccer loses in double OT to C. Michigan, beats Bowling Green

Women’s soccer split two home matches against Bowling Green and Central Michigan over the weekend.

Corner kicks stood out in Friday’s match between the Huskies (6-5-2, 2-2-2 MAC) and the Falcons (1-11-1, 0-4-1 MAC). The Huskies took seven and were able to capitalize on two of them in their come-from-behind, 2-1, victory over the Falcons. The Falcons took five corner kicks.

With Bowling Green leading 1-0, the Huskies found their equalizer in the 39th minute. Sophomore mid-fielder/forward Lauren Noonan scored her first career Huskie goal off a corner kick taken by senior forward/mid-fielder Shelbi Johnson.

NIU dominated possession for most of the second half, but the match remained scoreless until the 89th minute. Junior defender/mid-fielder Courtney Ksiazek headed in the game-winner off a short corner taken by Johnson.

“I think that, obviously, they’re a good physical team,” said Bowling Green interim head coach Kellie Evans. “They beat us in the air to it [the ball] … and obviously on their set pieces there is no secret [to] what they’re doing, they’re just executing.”

In its match Sunday, the Huskies were defeated by Central Michigan (9-4-1, 5-1-0 MAC), 2-1, in double overtime.

NIU opened the scoring on a penalty kick in the 26th minute by sophomore forward Allie McBride. Central Michigan’s defender Katie Slaughter was ejected from the game after a hard foul.

In the 75th minute, senior mid-fielder Autumn Hawkins scored her first goal of the season for Central Michigan, tying the game, 1-1.

The Chippewas outshot the Huskies 10-4 in the second half and 19-9 for the game.

Coach John Ross said his team needed to take better advantage of being up a player.

“We just have to make good decisions on the ball and be able to connect the first pass,” Ross said. “If we can connect the first pass, we can stretch them out and get ’em moving. We struggled with that when that happened and that’s something we’ll definitely be working on.”

Neither team registered a shot in the first 10-minute period of overtime, but that all changed in the 108th minute when Central Michigan freshman mid-fielder/defender Christen Chiesa rifled one from just outside the 18 yard box to the top corner of the net to win the game.

A representative from Central Michigan was unavailable for comment following the match.
