Reavis Hall roof repairs underway

Some faculty members have been adjusting well to the ongoing repairs of Reavis Hall’s roof.

Construction workers at Reavis Hall are working on completing a total roof replacement, said Paul Palian, director of media and public relations.

“The workmen were polite and even stopped by to see if the noises were too loud,” said English teaching assistant Caitriona Terry.

English teaching assistant Sarah Greenwood said the sounds of the construction have not been as bad as she expected them to be.

“I don’t mind the holes in the ceiling as long as there is no leakage which has happened in the past,” Greenwood said.

The roof is 27 years old and the original schedule for roof repairs was put on hold in 2011, Palian said. An emergency repair of the roof began on Sept. 28, and is projected to cost about $250,000.

“The summer caused the roof to be extremely dry,” Palian said.

Stains from water damage are still evident in the ceiling tiles inside the third floor of Reavis Hall and some tiles are missing. Construction workers are planning on fixing the whole roof to prevent future leaks and damages before they can fix the ceilings inside the building, Palian said.

Freshman nursing major Chardae French said the construction was not distracting, but she was worried about the roof caving in.

Some classes in Reavis Hall had to be moved to new locations in other buildings due to the construction. Signs posted outside of the classroom doors in Reavis showed where these classes now take place, like DuSable Hall and Gabel Hall.
