October 15, 2012
The NIU Army ROTC Battalion participated in a community outreach effort on Oct. 9, according to a NIU Army ROTC Battalion news release.
A small group of senior cadets drove out to St. Charles to train the Cub Scout Pack 801, according to the NIU Army ROTC Battalion. The scouts are also known as the Wolves, and they invited the cadets to teach them basic land navigation skills.
Eleven Cub Scouts and their fathers participated in the community outreach event, according to the NIU Army ROTC Battalion. Some of the skills the cadets taught included reading a map and learning different symbols and colors of a map. Other skills the cadets taught included the different components of a compass and how to navigate using one. After learning the basics of using a compass, the scouts navigated through a course where they were given a direction and a distance. According to the NIU Army ROTC Battalion, the scouts navigated to each point under the supervision of Cadets Alex Noll, Wesley Andrewski, Taylor Hartsough and Edward Tolle. The fathers of the scouts and scout leaders also took part in the training side-by-side with the scouts. The scouts had fun and were grateful to the cadets, according to the NIU Army ROTC Battalion.
