Volunteers, guides needed for Sycamore Historic Homes Walk
October 17, 2012
Volunteers are needed to guide tours on historical houses of the Sycamore area during the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival.
The Historic Homes Walk will be held on Oct. 27 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. as part of the Sycamore Pumpkin Festival. The walk is hosted by the Sycamore History Museum, 1730 N. Main St. in Sycamore, this year and has been hosted by the Friends of the Sycamore Library in the past. Tickets are $20 and free for children 12 and under. The walk will consist of visiting five different historical homes.
“The whole idea is to tell stories of homes and properties that have been important,” said Jayne Higgins, event coordinator and board member of museum. “And of course to see the cool houses.”
Homes included on the tour are the newly renovated depot, the Faivre House, 726 Somonauk St.; the Lundeen home, 708 Somonauk St.; the old East School, 410 Elm St., and the Engh Farm which is home to the Sycamore History Museum.
Volunteers are needed to guide the tours and share information about the homes, properties and rooms. Volunteers will be assigned their duties after they choose one of the three shifts. There is still need for volunteers for the second and third shift. The second shift runs from noon to 2:30 p.m. and third shift goes from 2:15 to 5:00 p.m.
Volunteers would be provided with information about the houses and they would share that information,” said JoAnn Minter, volunteer coordinator. “Previous shifts may learn more information and pass that to the next shift to share.”
Volunteers will be provided with the information of their tour spots at a meeting at 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Sycamore History Museum. The training will last about 30 minutes, Minter said. All volunteers will get free tickets to the tour.
The Sycamore History Museum offers many other opportunities to volunteer, said Michelle Donahoe, the museum’s executive director. Volunteers are needed to help with archives and research, writing newsletters, planning educational programs, developing gardens and greeters. Training is provided for all volunteers twice a year, and as needed for special events.
