Yell like Hell can be a way for students to fully enjoy their college experience.

The competition is a friendly and competitive cheer and dance competition, said Rickey Layfield, president of Campus Activities Board (CAB).

“I really feel like Yell like Hell shows school spirit,” Layfield said.

The groups involved in the competition put together cheerleading routines and stunts, said CAB adviser Dain Gotto.

The participants perform their routines for two minutes and 30 seconds for four judges. The routines are judged on the yell, use of motion and jumps, floor use, difficulty, creativity, NIU spirit and overall effect.

Chris Lloyd, junior industrial and systems engineering major, said fraternities and sororities usually join together in the competition. He said students should come to the event to learn about what it is. CAB is sponsoring it because it is a homecoming activity and it sponsors most those activities.

Gotto said 13 teams will be participating in the competition. The number of teams has varied from nine to 12 in previous years.

Yell Like Hell may be a way for students to let loose, but it also captures what homecoming is all about, Gotto said.

“People come out of their box and have fun,” Layfield said.

Lloyd said he was on the Homecoming court last year and got a front row seat to the competition. He said the event will be more entertaining if more students come.

“I like the variety of the dance and cheer routines they came up with,” Lloyd said.

Freshman chemistry major Kyle Mondron said he finds Yell Like Hell interesting, but said he thinks the event being located at the Convocation Center is too far away.

The competition will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Convocation Center.
