Student-submitted artwork would honor MLK

Student artists are invited to submit artwork to commemorate the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr., according to a Hostelling International USA press release.

The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Hostelling International Chicago will hold the seventh annual Martin Luther King Jr. mural competition this year. Artists will be challenged to create temporary works of art memorializing Martin Luther King Jr. and exploring the struggle for social justice, according to Hostelling International USA.

The deadline for submission is Oct. 1. Up to 20 artists will be selected to create murals as part of an exhibition. The first place winner will earn $300, the second place winner will earn $200 and the third place winner will earn $100, according to Hostelling International USA.

The murals will be on display for Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Jan. 21. The exhibition will be free and open to the public from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day at the Hostelling International Chicago, 24 E. Congress Parkway.
