Say it Out Loud program begins this week

By Northern Star Staff

Students, staff and faculty are invited to participate in a series of programs this week meant to give them a safe space to discuss mental health issues, according to a NIU Counseling, Adult and Higher Education press release.

NIU will host a campus-wide Say it Out Loud campaign, according to NIU Counseling, Adult and Higher Education. The event will run Sunday through Friday and will feature film showings, discussion tables and art shows.

Say it Out Loud is a state-wide initiative funded by the Illinois Children’s Mental Health Partnership and is based on research showing that talking about mental health lowers the societal pressures that keep people from seeking treatment, according to NIU Counseling, Adult and Higher Education.

The events will be led by counseling professors Charles Myers and Toni Tollerud and also be coordinated by graduate student Elisa Woodruff, according to NIU Counseling, Adult and Higher Education. The event is free and open to all.
