Speaker questions editorial

The Northern Star has outdone itself this time.

Recently, the “editors” of the Northern Star stated that its Editorial Board felt that the leadership of both the University and the Student Association were “out of touch” from ordinary students regarding the new policy to use NIU police to make students feel safe at their off campus parties.

I am known for not keeping my opinion to myself and this time shall be no different.

This is the same newspaper that has time and time again provided inaccurate and unsubstantiated information and then called it news. It’s funny to me how they have reacted to this new policy, considering part of the problem is that we have a perceived violence problem due to the fear and strife they perpetuate.

I have been a vocal supporter of this new program and have spoken with many students who are as well. Who has the Star spoken with? Are they actually representing a student voice other than their own?

Now, on to this “Editorial Board.” Typically, an editorial board is made up of seasoned journalists with a great deal of experience and knowledge under their belts. This then gives them a depth to properly judge and critique things as a board.

Our “board,” however, is made up of people who have very little experience at all and now stand behind their titles to give their “unbiased” opinion as if we are all supposed to take heed.

It’s time for the students, faculty and staff of this university to stand up to this newspaper and demand better. I, for one, am tired of their lousy reporting, poor scope of news and subpar editorials. I challenge the leadership at the Star to refer back to the old phrase about glass houses. Maybe next time they won’t be so quick to throw the first stone.
