Softball to take on UIC
April 17, 2012
After going 2-3 on its five game homestand, NIU softball takes a break from MAC play and heads back on the road to face UIC Wednesday.
Despite those three loses in their last five games, the Huskies (18-23, 6-6 MAC) are on a two-game winning-streak, as they took care of Kent State Saturday and Sunday.
In those games, offense was the key for the Huskies, as they had 21 hits, which led to 16 runs. They made a big change in moving Nicole Gremillion from the leadoff spot to the ninth spot, and moving Stephanie Tofft from the three-hitter hole to the leadoff spot.
Gremillion adapted to the change well, as she recorded four hits, one of them a home run, while driving in three runs in those two games.
“I think that we were getting production from all parts of our lineup,” said softball Head Coach Lindsay Chouinard. “We switched up the lineup a little bit and the girls responded well.”
The Flames (18-22) have lost seven of their last 10 games, but are coming off a win against Detroit as they return home after a nine-game road trip.
UIC is a strong team at the plate, as it has four hitters with a batting average above .320.
The Flames’ most dangerous hitter is Coryn Schmit, who leads the team with 29 RBIs and with six home runs is tied for the team lead.
In their latest victory, the Flames recorded a season-high 20 hits against Detroit.
UIC’s leadoff hitter, Melinda Macias, went 5-5 in that game with a home run, scoring three runs. Their designated hitter, Kara Komp, had four hits and drove in two runs.
