Reavis 205 used to be a classroom with a computer lab. Now it stands empty with nothing but a whiteboard, but not for long.

Associate communications professor Laura Vazquez said the now empty classroom will be turned into a new smart classroom.

Smart classrooms come equipped with document cameras, projector screens and advanced computer and audiovisual equipment amongst other things.

“It was on this year’s money, so we had to get out of there by July 1,” Vazquez said.

Lesley Rigg, associate dean for research and graduate affairs, said everything was moved out of Reavis 205 around the time of spring break.

Rigg said the computers and other equipment in Reavis 205 was never meant to be in the classroom permanently.

“Reavis 205 was a temporary home for that equipment after the shooting in Cole Hall,” Rigg said. “That room was always meant to be a classroom.”

Now that Cole hall is renovated and hosting classes again, the equipment will be moved back there, Rigg said.

Charles Schumann, Jr., NIU information technology manager, said classes held in Reavis 205 will be moved to Reavis 206 for remodeling purposes.

Schumann said after the remodeling is completed, Reavis 205 will be back in service.

Rigg said she thinks the classroom should be ready to host classes by this summer or fall.
