NIU men’s and women’s golf will both be in action over the weekend.
The women’s team will head south to Carbondale to play in the SIU Invitational. The Huskies are coming off a seventh place finish in the NIU Snowbird.
“Well, it was great. We were able to in the first time in the 26 years that I’ve been coaching…it was the first time we were able to bring everyone on the spring break trip,” said Pam Tyska, NIU women’s golf coach. “We got to take a look at everyone, and everyone got a chance to get six rounds under their belt before we come back and continue the spring season.”
Tyska said the Huskies’ most consistent play has come from junior Allie Parthie. Parthie said the Huskies and her own expectations are high going into the SIU Invitational.
“I was constantly placing in the top 10 last year, so I expect to do really well in this weekend’s invitational. But still hope to continue my success,” Parthie said. “For the team, we need to come out strong like we did last week, and hopefully we can place in the top third.”
The men’s team is staying in Florida for the FAU Spring Break Championship, which is being hosted by Florida Atlantic. The Huskies are one of 15 teams that are in the field this weekend. Some of the field includes three Big Ten schools.
“We know it will be tough, especially with the some top schools in there,” said NIU men’s golf coach Tom Porten. “But we played well in the last tournament which featured three ranked teams and we are excited for the challenge.”
Porten said he doesn’t see playing Big Ten schools and other out of conference schools as a problem for NIU.
“This weekend will be a challenge since there are some top schools in the field, but we are coming off a fourth place finish at UCF which featured a few ranked teams,” Porten said. “It will be a very challenging event, but it is one that our team is looking forward to it due to the competition that is going to be there.”
