Men’s golf takes 3rd at FAU Spring Break Championship

NIU men’s golf took third place at the FAU Spring Break Championship this weekend.

The Huskies finished in front of several Big 10 schools and many schools who were ranked in front of them heading into the event.

“I feel real good that our team and program is heading in the right direction,” said NIU coach Tom Porten. “We didn’t play our best golf today and we still hung on to third.”

NIU was led by freshman Thomas Dunne, who finished tied for seventh with a 54-hole score of 211.

“We played really well, at this time in the fall we definitely wouldn’t be finishing third,” Dunne said. “We are definitely headed in the right direction, and hopefully we can keep carrying that momentum on through the season and into the Championship.”

Junior Griffin Bauman finished tied for 11th with a score of 212.

Porten said he feels very good about the team, and really likes the momentum they have right now. He hopes it carries over into the Irish Creek Collegiate, which begins next Saturday in Kannapolis, NC.

“We played very solid and consistent golf on this Florida swing,” Porten said, “I feel like we can continue to build upon that as we work our way into next weekend at North Carolina.”
