Voting in local primaries begins Tuesday

Polls open Tuesday for over 30 local primaries to decide who will be on the ballots in November.

Voters will participate in the local elections, with two state positions up for grabs and a national primary taking place. Eight of Tuesday’s elections will be contested seats, with a pair of Congressional seats, a set of General Assembly positions and the DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office among them.

Polls opened today at 6 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. The nearest polling place for NIU students will be the Campus Rec Center on the corner of Annie Glidden Road and Lucinda Avenue. Early voting closed Monday at 4:30 p.m., and all early and absentee ballots will be counted as soon as polls close Tuesday.

“This is an important opportunity for students,” DeKalb County Clerk John Acardo said. “These elections effect all people within DeKalb, whether they live, work, or are educated in the county. I encourage everyone to register and vote.”

Acardo said he expects the election to run smoothly, and is hoping to have results available as soon as possible.

“In the 2010 elections, polls closed at 7 p.m. and we had results available by 8:20 that night,” Acardo said. “All steps leading up to this point have run smoothly, and barring any challenges or petitions we hope to have results available quickly.”

According to the County Clerk’s election website, the three contested county board primaries are: County Board seats for districts 6, 11, and 12. The DeKalb County State’s Attorney’s Office is also a contested election.

The General Assembly contested seats are: the 35th district State Senate seat, and the 90th district State Representative seat.

Two Congressional level primaries will be on the ballot: the IL-14th Representative, and the IL-16th Representative. A primary election for the presidency will also be on the ballot.

Voters will also be electing delegates for the Republican and Democratic conventions in August.
