Chicago Tribune photographer to speak Friday
February 1, 2012
GradComm and the Northern Star will host Chicago Tribune photographer Scott Strazzante for the presentation “Shooting from the Hip” Friday.
Strazzante said the majority of the presentation will feature the type of work he does for the Tribune, but he will also show photographs from his daily photoblog.
“This is probably the best time to be a photojournalist,” Strazzante said. “I can go out into Chicago, put a photo on my blog and ten minutes later someone in India is commenting on it.”
GradComm President Leah Ryan said GradComm is an organization for graduate students in the communication department.
“Each semester we try to get a speaker to focus on each area of communications,” Ryan said.
Ryan said there are four areas in the communication graduate program: media, journalism, rhetoric and theory.
“In this day and age, journalism and media are blending,” Ryan said. “We chose Scott because he does a really good job of straddling journalism and media.”
Strazzante has spent the last 10 years of his 25-year, Chicago-based photo-journalism career at the Tribune.
“I shoot a lot of sports,” Strazzante said. “I’ve shot three Olympics, the Stanley Cup, the World Series and the Super Bowl.”
Prior to the presentation, there will be a lunch with Strazzante at Fatty’s Bar and Grill, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, beginning at 11 a.m. The presentation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Cavan Auditorium, Gabel Hall room 126. All students are welcome to attend.
