J. Cole to play Convo
February 12, 2012
A third spring semester concert is coming to the Convocation Center.
Rapper J. Cole will perform at 7:30 p.m. April 18 at the Convocation Center as part of the Campus Consciousness Tour.
North Carolina native Jeremy Cole earned recognition during last night’s Grammy’s, when he was nominated for Best New Artist before losing to Bon Iver.
Cole is touring in support of his 2011 debut LP Cole World: The Sideline Story, which received generally positive reviews from critics and features singles “Work Out” and “Can’t Get Enough” (featuring Trey Songz).
“Work Out” showcases Cole’s fast-paced rapping over samples of Kanye West’s “New Workout Plan” before lifting lines from Paula Abdul’s “Straight Up.”
Rapper Big K.R.I.T., who has earned his name as a producer and extensive mixtape discography, will open for Cole. Big K.R.I.T.’s first full-length debut, Live From the Underground, is due in 2012.
Started by jam rocker Adam Gardner of Guster and his wife Lauren Sullivan, the Campus Consciousness Tour is celebrating its tenth anniversary of entertaining college students while promoting a message of environmental responsibility.
According to a Convocation Center press release, students can register to vote and learn about how to take action for the environment.
“Cole is a refreshing exception to the quick route for fame and success,” the press release said. “J. Cole was the first artist signed to Jay-Z’s new Roc Nation label, and made himself through a scholarly approach to the game – no small feat considering his Magna Cum Laude distinction upon graduating from St. John’s University.”
Tickets are $35, and go on sale Thursday at the Convocation Center box office, Ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets. Students who purchase a ticket at the Convocation Center box office receive a $5 discount when they present a valid OneCard (limit two).
