Zach Miller may be out for season with knee injury

Zach Miller may be out for the rest of the season after tearing the meniscus cartilage in his knee.

According to webmd.com, the meniscus is a rubbery, C-shaped disc that cushions your knee, and a torn meniscus can prevent your knee from working right.

Mark Montgomery, NIU men’s basketball coach, confirmed that Miller will have surgeryThursday, and the Huskies are hoping for good news.

“We won’t really know the specifics until he gets in there, but he has a torn meniscus,” Montgomery said. “It’s hard to say if he’ll be done for the year, and unless when he’s in there and they discover it’s not as bad as they thought and he can come back sooner, the worst case scenario is that he will be finished for the season.”

Miller’s injury leaves a hole in the Huskies lineup. Montgomery will rely on a rotation of three players: freshmen Stian Berg and Marquavese Ford as well as senior DeMarcus Grady.

“It will be a point guard by committee approach, but right now Stian Berg is our starting point guard,” Montgomery said.

Miller, a freshman from Glenbard East High School, initially went down with an injury after the game against Western Michigan and did not play for two straight games.

He came back for brief periods in two losses to Ball State and Kent State, but did not play at all against Buffalo.

Miller’s best game thus far was in a 47-40 loss, in which he scored nine points, had three rebounds and four assists and made three out of five three point attempts.

This season, Miller averaged three points per game, 2.2 assists per game and 1.5 rebounds per game. He is also the current leader in total assists with 35 on the year for NIU.
