NIU volleyball defeats Bowling Green, prepares for MAC tournament
November 13, 2011
With the MAC regular season title already under its belt, NIU volleyball ended its regular season with a bang.
The Huskies’ (25-5, 14-2 MAC) winning streak is now at 13 after Saturday’s five-set, come-from-behind victory against Bowling Green (19-11, 6-10 MAC).
NIU fell behind early, dropping the first two sets, but improvements at the break led to 23-25, 22-25, 27-25, 25-15, 15-11 wins.
“Bowling Green did a great job today with putting us under a lot of pressure,” said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. “I thought we did a good job of settling down and playing more consistently as the match went on.”
Lauren Wicinski notched a double-double for the Huskies with 16 kills and 10 digs, while Mary Kurisch came out firing with 16 kills on a .448 hitting percentage. Wicinski set a career-high with seven blocks while Kurisch notched six.
Allison McGlaughlin contributed 14 kills and nine digs.
Kristin Hoffman added 51 assists and a team-high 16 digs. Justine Schepler continued her stellar defensive weekend with 15 digs, while libero Amber Walker recorded 12 digs of her own.
“I thought the team did some very nice things today,” Gooden said. “Justine continues to understand and fit into her role very well. She continues to improve. I thought Mary did a very good job and helped balance the offensive load today.”
Kurisch bounced back from a lackluster performance Thursday against Western Michigan. The Broncos’ defense held Kurish to a .130 hitting percentage with eight kills.
With NIU wrapping up its season with the No. 1 seed in the MAC already in hand, Kurisch and the Huskies did not want to lose any momentum going into next week’s MAC Tournament.
“[This weekend] was really big for us,” Kurisch said. “You never want to fold at the end and we knew we could pull through if we worked together as a team.”
NIU used the intermission before the third set to regroup and settle into a comfortable groove. After winning the third set in a tight 27-25 affair, the Huskies knew the match was theirs for the taking.
The Huskies gained complete control once the fourth set began, outhitting the Falcons .344 to .029 and limited them to only eight kills with seven attack errors.
Over the final three sets, the Huskies outhit Bowling Green .337 to .100 while only committing ten attack errors.
NIU will have the week to prepare for the MAC Tournament, which starts Nov. 18 in Geneva, Ohio.
