Housing & Dining to host meeting for prospective Community Advisors
October 2, 2011
Students have one more opportunity to learn about community adviser positions for the spring semester this week.
Housing & Dining will host the fourth and final informational meeting for prospective CAs at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Stevenson Smart Classroom. Applications must be in by Friday.
To be eligible, a student must have completed 24 credit hours by the end of the semester in which they are applying, have a minimum 2.3 semester and cumulative GPA, be available for meetings from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays and have lived in the residence halls one semester, according to NIU’s CA information website.
Freshman are ineligible to apply, but some are looking ahead.
“I hope to be a CA because I think it would be a great chance to hold a leadership position and learn how to interact with others,” said freshman undecided major Deanna Carlson. “It would also give me a chance to help people while being social.”
According to the NIU website, CAs assist residents with personal and academic concerns, encourage the development of mature behavior among residents, maintain an atmosphere conducive to academic excellence and coordinate programs and events that address the academic and personal needs of residents. They should also enforce university policy and regulations.
CAs will also have an opportunity to hone their decorating skills. CAs are expected to create bulletin boards, door decorations, and floor decorations, said Lauren Teso, Neptune Hall Complex Coordinator, in an informational meeting last week.
Some students at the meeting said they were excited at the opportunity.
“I want to be a CA mainly because of the benefits and experience,” said sophomore accounting major Adam Kirschner.
Some students also said being a CA presents an opportunity to be a leader.
“I want to be a CA for leadership experience,” said Broc Pagni, junior physical therapy major. “Another reason I’d like to be a CA would be getting to know people and to help with cost. It would also be a good thing to put on my resume for the physical therapy program.”
