October 16, 2011
Starting today and ending Friday, the Campus Recreation will host its mid-semester Group Fitness Free Week.
Students can try out any of the Campus Recreation’s group fitness classes for free. The free classes will include Yoga, Body Combat, Cycle, Zumba, Belly Dancing, Hard Core, Hip Hop Hustle, Just Dance, 20/20/20, Pilates, Salsa, Sculpt and Stretch, Total Body Conditioning, and Turbokick.
Students like Latavia Bagsby, a junior public health major, are looking forward to having a free chance to take these class.
“I would go for the exercises,” Bagsby said.
Before students can take a free class they must fill out the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (Par Q-Form) prior to attending their first class. The Par Q-form is available at the Campus Recreation website at www.niu.edu/recservices/_pdf/PARQform.pdf
After the free week students may purchase a mid-semester FitPass for $33 in order to enjoy these same classes for the rest of the semester. Students can purchase a FitPass online at the Campus Recreation’s website under Fitness, Wellness, & Nutrition by clicking Group Fitness.
While a variety of classes are available for students to take, Leanne Kulchawik,, fitness graduate assistant at the Student Recreation Center, said some classes allow for only a certain number of students, so students should arrive early.
“Students should take advantage of free week because it is a great way to try out different types of exercises,” Kulchawik said. “All of the classes are free and you can go to as many as you’d like.”
Also from Oct. 24 to Dec. 2, the Campus Recreation also offers its Huskie Fit Club, a six-week program that provides students with a personal trainer, use of fitness equipment, weekly exercise routines tailored to the student’s needs, a nutrition education, pre- and post-fitness assessments to track improvements, and participation in Power Challenges for $99. Eight to ten students can be in one group.
Students can pay online at the Campus Recreation’s website than click on register for Huskie Fit Club.
Eric Appiah, , assistant director of fitness and wellness at the Student Recreation Center, said that in the past this program has been successful for students who want to lose weight.
“This program has been really successful for those that participate in it. They have seen inches lost, weight loss, and increased energy,” Appiah said. “Our goal is to help students develop a healthy lifestyle by giving them a template to be able to learn how to strength train.”
