Men’s soccer wins Michigan Invite

NIU men’s soccer won the University of Michigan Invitational championship this weekend.

The Huskies (3-0-0) beat Oakland Friday, 2-1, and shut out Michigan Sunday, 1-0.

“We had a good pre-season and are really coming together as a team,” said senior defender Pat Sloan. “We have been working hard and are getting the results that we all want and expect from ourselves.”

Four Huskies were named to the all-tournament team: Sloan, junior goal keeper Jordan Godsey, and senior midfielders Francis Otira and Brad Horton.

Sloan came up in a clutch for NIU this weekend, scoring the game winning goal in both games.

“Getting those goals feels really good,” Sloan said. “I am just trying to help out the team anyway that I can, and I just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

NIU freshman forward Paul Hogan scored his second goal of the season in the first game against Oakland.

Godsey played strong this weekend, only giving up one goal in the Oakland game and then shutting out Michigan. The Huskies’ goalie recorded a total of seven saves during the weekend.

NIU men’s head soccer coach Eric Luzzisaid he is pleased with the way the team is performing, but he knows they can still perform at a higher level.

“We have been just doing what it takes to win games,” Luzzi said. “But we have not even begun to scratch the surface of our true potential. We have not played as sharp as we can, and I am excited to see us perform at the level that I know we are capable of performing at.”
