Students should show some courtesy when attending guest speakers

By Jim Lentz

Totally by chance, I had the pleasure of hearing the intervarsity sponsored guest speaker, Cliffe Knechtle,

answer questions on Christianity outside the Holmes Student Center on September 23.

It was annoying that certain students continued to interrupt and talk over Pastor Cliffe’s answers during the exchange of thoughts and ideas. Several times, the guest Pastor had to stop while the interrupting students attempted to jam their thoughts down the throat of the listening audience in the MLK area.

In the future, I would ask that all NIU students have the professional courtesy to L-I-S-T-E-N to the guest speaker as well as respond to them. I would ask any NIU professor reading this to teach your students not to interrupt or talk over others conversation. I was an NIU Accounting teaching assistant from 1969 to 1971 and did not let anyone in my classes interrupt or talk over someone while speaking in class.
