Students’ families invited for weekend campus activities

Today marks the first day of NIU’s annual Fall Family Weekend, where students can invite their families to a number of events.

The event is planned by Huskie Family Connections, an organization which aims to provide parents a connection to the university.

“It is an opportunity for parents to visit campus with their students, connect with staff and have a good time,” said HFC assistant director Darion Page.

HFC began in 1997 and was called The Parents’ Association, but the name was changed to Huskie Family Connections to be more inclusive.

“We continue to enhance the program to embrace the ever growing needs of our students,” Page said.

Throughout the weekend, students and family can enjoy free Recreation Services, NIU Art Museum exhibits and the NIU Observatory. The Huskies Den will offer bowling at discount prices. Students can also enjoy the musical “Curtains” and the play “Theophilus North”.

Today, Family Weekend will offer an Outdoor Adventures event, “Camp on Campus” from 6 p.m. to 10 a.m. at West Lagoon. The event will sport live music, sporting activities and a bonfire.

In addition, HFC will host a Welcome Reception Dinner at 7 p.m. at Swen Parson Hall.

Some students, like Maryann Vu, junior pre-physical therapy major, were unaware of Family Weekend.

“I would have invited [my family] if I had known,” Vu said. “I have a lot going on this weekend.”

Jessica Byczynski, junior early childhood education major, doesn’t have family coming this weekend, but made plans for next.

“They’re coming up to go to the Jonamac Apple Orchard,” Byczynski said.
