Huskies look ahead to Northwestern Lakeside Classic

No. 13 ranked, undefeated NIU men’s soccer team looks to continue its winning ways this weekend in the Northwestern Lakeside Classic in Evanston.

The Huskies (5-0-0) have won back-to-back invites and expect to win this invite as well, said senior midfielder Finn Jor.

“Our goal before the season was to win all three tournaments we played in this year,” Jor said. “We want to win and remain undefeated.”

This may be the toughest of the three tournaments for NIU, said Eric Luzzi, head men’s soccer coach.

“Xavier is undefeated and won their last game 5-0,” Luzzi said. “And on the other hand, UC Davis is good. They just beat UCLA who is one of the top five teams in the country. This will be our toughest tournament.”

The Huskies will play the Musketeers Friday and will follow up with the Aggies Sunday.

A big reason for NIU’s early success is player development and team chemistry.

“We have better players on this team than we have ever had before,” Luzzi said. “There is a lot of talent on this team, and they play the game together, as a team. Every single person on this team has bought in and that is the biggest thing for us.”

Luzzi’s expectation for this weekend is no different than any other weekend.

“Nothing will change from us,” Luzzi said. “We are focused on Friday and Friday only. I expect us to work really hard, be confident with the ball and put the other team under pressure. I expect us to get the result we want if we work hard and battle.”
