Does DeKalb have a good bar scene? Yes.

By Colin Remes

There are the plenty of fun and awesome bars in Dekalb.

The problem with the nightlife isn’t a lack of good places to go out, drink and have fun with your friends. The problem is that Dekalb places overly strict liquor laws on any establishment that provides liquor and this makes it difficult for any new bars to start up here. The one’s we DO have are great.

From the sheer size and dance club style bar that is Starbusters, 930 Pappas Drive, or the plethora of margarita flavors offered at Eduardo’s,

214 E. Lincoln Highway, (not to mention an excellent shot called a Drunken Monkey), to the classiness of Tapa La Luna, 226 E. Lincoln Highway, (they have excellent sangria, dozens of wines, and of course a full liquor bar), there is a bar in Dekalb for everyone’s wallet and everyone’s taste.

There are too many great bars to talk about in detail for the space provided here. So we’ll just talk about the one that when I asked fellow students and friends, “What’s your favorite bar in Dekalb?” they responded with most. The most popular answer was Fatty’s, 1312 W. Lincoln Highway, so we’ll focus on that for the remainder.

Every weekend Fatty’s has events, DJ’s, live bands, and more to entertain their patrons. Fatty’s always draws a strong, fun-loving crowd and it’s popular among the greek community and the non-greek community alike.

It offers the dancing room and DJ performances of a place like Starbusters, a back bar with a pool table, darts, and an excellent beer garden with many students favorite game to play and drink simultaneously, bags! Other events include everything from karaoke to hot wings eating contests.

When it comes to food I have two words for you: potato salad. Just kidding, I have more than two words for their food. From their sandwiches to their burgers or wings, Fatty’s has great bar food that is always delicious and reasonably priced.

When it comes to distance from student housing the people I talked to said this is the one thing they don’t like about Fatty’s, but here’s the deal: It’s not that far. If patrons have a little too much to drink and need to walk home, it’s not that long of a walk. And you can come pick up your car in the morning when you’re safe to drive. And if you’re really concerned about how much you’ll be drinking and are too lazy to walk an extra half-mile, then head to Starbusters.

However for prices, atmosphere, food and fun, Fatty’s will fill your stomach with delicious food, get plenty of drinks for you and your friends, offer tons of fun events, live performances, and competitions, all the while going easy on your wallet. What more could you ask for?
