Monarchs! event helps kids discover butterflies
September 15, 2011
The Midwest Museum of Natural History [MMNH] will hold an informational meeting about Monarch butterflies Saturday.
The event is from 10:30 a.m. to noon, said Heather Williams, education specialist for MMNH.
Monarchs! will feature a presentation about Monarch butterflies from Janie Grillo, a Monarch Watch volunteer. Grillo will talk about the butterflies’ lifestyle, stages of life and the length of migration they take every year to get from the U.S. to Mexico, Williams said.
“Janie calls herself an enthusiast.” said MMNH executive director Molly Holman. “But I call her an expert. She’s been working with butterflies for a long time.”
Beyond just a spoken presentation, those in attendance will be able to interact with the program.
They will be shown how to tag butterflies and, if weather permits, release them to go on their yearly migration, Holman said.
This is the second time the museum held this event. Last year, the participants were able to release the butterflies and track their movement south, said Margaret Glick, board of directors president for MMNH.
Additionally, the museum will participate in an activity called Journey North.
Journey North is a simulated migration, wherein children color pictures of butterflies and mail them all to Mexico, where they will be mixed up and mailed back come springtime, Holman said.
This shows how butterflies from one location can migrate back to a totally different one.
Monarchs! costs $4 plus the cost of admission to the museum for non-members, and $3 for members, who do not have to pay museum admission, Williams said.
According to the museum’s website, admission to the museum is $6 for adults and $5 for seniors or children under 12.
Participants do not need to pre-register for the event, but are encouraged to arrive early to find a good seat.
The Midwest Museum of Natural History is located at 425 W. State St. in Sycamore.
