DeKALB | NIU men’s soccer goalkeeper Jordan Godsey has been stellar between the pipes this season. The Ocean Springs, Miss. native started all seven games and played every minute for the Huskies in goal this year.

The junior has allowed four goals while recording 18 saves, as well as four shutouts.

Godsey took some time to sit down with the Northern Star to discuss his interest in goalkeeping, what other position he’d like to play and if he does anything special before he hits the field.

Northern Star: What drew you to becoming a goalkeeper?

Jordan Godsey: I started playing soccer when I was about 13. I was playing at this camp when the goalie got hurt, so I jumped into the goal, and I have been playing goalie ever since.

NS: What do you like most about being a goalkeeper?

JG: I like the fact that I’m always under the radar. You can’t make mistakes when you play this position.

NS: What does it take to be a goalkeeper at the college level?

JG: In order to be a goalkeeper at the college level, you have to have good communication with your defense. You have to be extremely competitive and you have to hate losing.

NS: If you could play any other position in soccer, what it be and why?

JG: If I could play any position, I would have to pick forward. I picked forward because I think I could probably score goals, but they won’t let me try.

NS: Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions before each game?

JG: I actually do have a pregame ritual. Before every game, I have to run backwards into the goal, and then touch the crossbar. After that, I look to the stands and I blow my mom a kiss. I have done that since high school.
