NIU campus crime blotter for Sept. 7

The following was taken directly from the University Police. Anyone mentioned is presumed innocent until proved guilty in a court of law. The University Police Department provides police reports on the Web at finfacil.niu.edu/PublicSafety.

FRIDAY

  • At 12:05 a.m., a student at Grant Hall was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct for unlawful consumption of alcohol.
  • At 2:40 a.m., a student was found to have unlawfully consumed alcohol at Douglas Hall. The student was given a verbal warning.
  • At 3:01 a.m., a student at Lincoln Hall was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct for unlawful consumption of alcohol.
  • At 12:26 p.m., the theft of two library books was reported. This case is under investigation.
  • At 2:24 p.m., Health Services gave medical treatment to a person who gave them a false name, which resulted in theft of labor or services. This case is under investigation.
  • At 8:11 p.m., officers found a student in possession of a small amount of cannabis at 1152 Lucinda Ave. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.
  • At 11:52 a.m., a student at Lot X was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct for unlawful consumption of alcohol.

SATURDAY

  • At 1:04 a.m. Duan Bates, 18, of Chicago, was arrested for battery, illegal consumption of alcohol and for resisting a peace officer. Police responded after two people were found fighting and separated and interviewed all involved parties that lead into Bates arrest. He was transported to NIU Police Department where he was booked and later transported to DeKalb County Jail.
  • At 1:23 p.m., a student at 900 Fotis Drive was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct for unlawful consumption of alcohol.
  • At 3:31 a.m., a student at Stevenson North was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct for unlawful consumption of alcohol.
  • At 4:04 p.m., an officer encountered a person who appeared to be under 21 holding a beer can. When the officer asked the person for their name and birth date, they provided false information. Ryan Taylor, 18, of Crystal Lake, was arrested with obstruction identification and possession of alcohol by a minor.

SUNDAY

  • At 1 a.m., a student at Douglas Hall was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct for unlawful consumption of alcohol.
  • At 2:43 a.m., Michael Nietert, 19 of Naperville, was arrested for possession of cannabis and drug paraphernalia. Nietert was transported to the NIU Police Department and was released on bond.
  • At 6:24 a.m., a student was found to have unlawfully consumed alcohol at Grant South and used an emergency call box when no emergency existed. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.
  • At 10:06 p.m., an officer conducting a building check of the sixth floor of Grant North C Tower smelled cannabis. Students of the suspected room produced cannabis and drug paraphernalia and were referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.
  • At 10:37 p.m., a student was found with a small amount of cannabis at Grant North. The student was referred to the Office of Community Standards and Student Conduct.

MONDAY

  • At 2:11 p.m. an officer responded to the third floor of the NIU Parking Garage for a report of criminal damage. The officer met with the complainant, who said between 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. someone broke the front passenger side window of his car but nothing was taken. This case is under investigation.
