Women’s soccer looking to capture first MAC win at home
September 29, 2011
NIU women’s soccer (1-7-2) will host Akron (4-3-1) and Ohio (4-6-0) at the NIU soccer complex this weekend.
The Huskies come off back-to-back losses to Toledo and Ball State this weekend, while Akron will come in riding a four-match undefeated streak, including a tie.
“Every game is a tough game,” said NIU head women’s soccer coach Carrie Barker. “Akron is a very tough opponent. They are very physical and athletic.”
Akron comes into this contest with a 1-0-1 record in MAC play.
“We had two great training sessions this week, and we have to be ready to battle against Akron.” Barker said.
Ohio will come in to the game off a loss, but is also slated to play Western Michigan Friday. The Bobcats are 1-1-0 in conference play.
Coming into the matchup with NIU, Ohio will be in its second match of a four-match road trip.
“This is our second week of conference play,” Barker said. “All 12 teams are still alive. They are all trying to fight and grab anything they can.”
NIU will attempt to avenge its loss against Toledo with the opportunity to get its first conference win at home.
“When you have a home game, you fight that much harder to protect your home turf,” Barker said. “It’s the mentality we try to pass on to our players.”
