Faceoff: Super Bowl winner

By Tony Osborne & Brian Thomas

Tony Osborne: Well, Brian, that was an exciting game on Saturday night at Huskie Stadium. It just seems to get my blood pumping for some football! But let’s talk some NFL; who do you think will be carrying the Lombardi Trophy off the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis?

Brian Thomas: I believe that the Philadelphia Eagles will win the Super Bowl because they filled a need in their secondary. They brought in one of the top cornerbacks in the league in Nnamdi Asomugha and another corner in Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Eagles will have a very tough defense, and I haven’t even started with their offense yet.

T.O.: Well I will be the first one to go against the “Dream Team,” and as much as it pains me to say this, I see a repeat in the future of the Green Bay Packers. They are deep in all positions, and have almost everyone back from last season. I will start with that “Dream Team” offense. Vince Young, not the savior. He has proven to be a head case, and with a $100 million contract in Michael Vick, Young will be lucky to see the field. This leads me to believe that yes, a good back-up quarterback is a great asset, but the press makes him out to be one of the knights in shining armor that they acquired in the off-season.

B.T.: Well, Young doesn’t need to see the field. Vick was the runner up last year for the NFL MVP and will have just as good a season, if not better this year. Vick has so many guys to throw to and has better chemistry with them this year than he did last year.

T.O.: I would take a calm, cool and collected Aaron Rodgers over Vick any day. Rodgers has proven he can take over a game to get the victory. That said, you also cannot compare Rodgers-Cromartie to Charles Woodson, who may just find his way to the Hall of Fame. Woodson is a shut-down corner that every quarterback in the NFL knows what he will do if they make a mistake throwing his way.

B.T.: You can take Rodgers. I’ll stick with Vick because he is a play maker and has one of the best play makers on his team in DeSean Jackson. After watching them in the “Miracle at the Meadowlands Part 2” against the New York Giants last season, I would trust them in any situation. They will find ways to win games.

T.O.: Jackson is a play maker, no way around that. But, the Packers have a guy that some may call a big play buster in Clay Matthews.

B.T.: No doubt about that. As good as Matthews and the Green Bay defense is, I think the Eagles offense is too overpowering. I see that offense dominating the entire league all year. And with a reliant defense that will shut teams down, I just don’t see teams competing with the Eagles this year.

T.O.: We’ll see how the ageless wonder Donald Driver feels about that prediction, because you and I know he is another guy that is going to perform at a consistent level, that will do nothing but help the team. The Packers are full of those kind of guys; hard-nosed ball players. I wish they would throw some of that fire down to the Windy City.

B.T.: Well, I feel like we can let these two teams do the talking for us in the NFC championship game because I have the feeling they will both be there.

T.O.: We shall see, Brian. Even though I took the Packers, that doesn’t mean I will be upset if there is an upset or two in there! If nothing else, it should be an entertaining NFL season right alongside another thrilling college football season as well.
