NIU women’s volleyball traveled to the cheesiest place on Earth Tuesday night, facing the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where the Huskies have not lost since 1989.

The Huskies (3-2) took down the Phoenix (1-3), sweeping them 25-19, 25-20 and 25-22. UW-Greenbay was limited to a .185 attack percentage, while being outnumbered 47-35 in kills. NIU has now won 16 consecutive matches against the Phoenix, and 19 out of 20 overall.

“Our serving was great tonight,” said NIU head coach Ray Gooden. “It put Green Bay under pressure from the beginning of the point and helped us with our blocking and got us to score points with more efficiency.”

Leading the way in kills for the Huskies was senior Allison McGlaughlin with 11. NIU outside hitter Lauren Wicinski had nine kills, 19 digs and an ace.

The MAC West Offensive Player of the Week said the Huskies’ goal was to stay consistent and play at their pace. NIU did just that while producing 121 total attacks.

Junior Mary Kurisch led the Huskies with 12 total points. Kurisch recorded nine kills and a block against the Phoenix.

NIU jumped ahead 11-10 in the first set and never relinquished the lead. From that point until late in the third set, the Huskies controlled the match. Led by four different players with double-digit points, the balanced attack was enough to sweep the Phoenix.

NIU did not trail throughout the second set while recording 15 of their 47 kills. Four different Huskies recorded at least three kills, led by Sarah Angelos, who posted 4 of her 10 total kills. Kristin Hoffman set 13 of her 34 assists while NIU took the set from the Phoenix. Hoffman assisted ten of McGlaughlin’s 11 kills.

“Kristin was setting the ball great all night so I had good opportunities,” McGlaughlin said. “She did a really good job.”

Hoffman also added three kills in three attempts in the match.

The final leg of the sweep proved to be the most challenging for NIU. The Huskies avoided a comeback from Green Bay after a couple timeouts taken by Gooden late in the third set with two kills from Angelos and Wicinski to end the match.

“[Green Bay] started gaining momentum and we were making errors,” Wicinski said. “We knew that we had to stop them and pass the ball so we could a good set and a good swing.”

With the season in motion, NIU is already looking ahead to this weekend’s Creighton Invitational, which starts Friday in Omaha.
