Military Student Services plans food drive for Saturday’s game
August 31, 2011
DeKALB | Military Student Services will hold a canned food drive at Huskie Stadium Saturday.
The food drive will be held outside Huskie Stadium before the NIU vs. Army game.
“We’ll be at the east and west entrances of the stadium,” said Jennifer Jeffries, Military Student Services receptionist. “You can find us after 4 p.m.”
Donations will also be accepted before Saturday. Canned items and non-perishable goods can be dropped off at any time at the Military Student Services office, Jeffries said.
People who make donations at the Military Student Services booth on Saturday will receive discount vouchers for their tickets to the game.
“When you bring your food, we’ll give you a voucher,” Jeffries said. “Bring that voucher to the ticket gate and you’ll get $10 off non-student admission.”
People looking to get vouchers must make their donations on Saturday.
“The vouchers are copyable,” Jeffries said. “So we can’t give them out before Saturday.”
Charities find themselves short on donations this time of year.
“In non-holiday seasons, there aren’t a lot of people donating,” said Megan Gerken, assistant director of Programs and Support for Military Student Services. “We’re trying to help stock their pantries.”
The drive is also collecting non-perishables such as flour, sugar, peanut butter or noodles, Gerken said.
Johnathon McCarthy, Military Student Services student marketing design coordinator, said the food drive will be held to benefit the Salvation Army in an attempt to show the good military students can do.
“Sometimes military students get a bad reputation,” McCarthy said. “We’re trying to show the good we can do for the community.”
Donations can be brought to the Military Student Services Office, on the fourth floor of Adams Hall.
