Farmer’s Markets open in DeKalb and Sycamore
June 30, 2011
Locally grown produce and flowers, homemade crafts, wine, fresh air and live music are available each week at DeKalb and Sycamore farmer’s markets.
The DeKalb Farmer’s Market is located at S. Fourth Street and Grove Street and is celebrating its 25th year.
The market is open from noon to 6:00 p.m., Thursdays from June to October, and boasts a variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, flowers, homemade pet treats, crafts, wine, and cheese, all locally grown and made, said Re:New DeKalb marketing and special events coordinator Lindsey Engelsman.
Returning this year is the Live Lunch Music Series, which occurs from noon to 1 p.m. on market days, Engelsman said.
“The Live Lunch Music Series is presented by the Egyptian Theatre in order to provide the market with free live music,” Englesman said. “Come out and bring a lunch, buy lunch from the market or from one of the great restaurants in downtown DeKalb and enjoy some music.”
A short drive away from DeKalb, Discover Sycamore hosts the Sycamore Farmer’s Market, located at Somonouk Street and Elm Street, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays from June to September.
Discover Sycamore director Lauren Diehl said over 15 vendors set up shop every weekend. She said attractions are fresh produce, hormone-free meat, a pet bakery, fresh flowers, a gourmet olive vendor, a local winery and vendor who makes BBQ sauces, salsa and mustard.
Diehl said live music would be featured this summer, also from noon to 1 p.m. Acoustic guitarists, a jazz choir and a classic rock tribute band have played in recent weeks.
“We’ve had a variety of local musicians,” said Diehl. “[But] we’re still looking for acts for this season.”
