Midwest Museum of Natural History hosts Rocking for the Reptiles event

Bring your friends, your family and your camera; just don’t bring any Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Those are already provided for you.

The Midwest Museum of Natural History (MMNH), 425 W. State St. in Sycamore, will host its first “Rockin’ for the Reptiles” fundraiser from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.

According to a press release, the event will be held in the parking lot directly across the street from the museum, on the corner of West State Street and California Street. The event will feature live music, games, activities, food, a moon-bounce and live animals.

Although this event is on Saturday, MMNH director Molly Holman, said the event was four months in the making.

Holman said the purpose of the fundraiser is to help aid in the cost of the museum’s animal care, as well as their education programming.

MMNH plans to pair Rockin’ for the Reptiles with another fundraising event which occurs in the winter and targets adults, Holman said.

“We’ve been looking for something to do in the summer that offers an opportunity for families and children,” Holman said.

Holman said the event also features music from Yesterday’s News and Relativity. The Barb City Swing Connection and Conexion Comunidad will perform between music sessions.

For live animal entertainment, Holman said there will be at least 15 different types of animals, ranging from docile tortoises to not-so-admirable Madagascar hissing cockroaches.

The event is sponsored by Castle Bank, 511 W. State St. in Sycamore, Suter Co., 258 May St. in Sycamore, and Hy-Vee, 2700 Dekalb Ave. in Sycamore, Holman said.

Admission costs $2 for adults, $6 for children (ages 1-12) and $20 for a family pass, the release stated.
