Ludwig named new wrestling head coach

In May, Ryan Ludwig became 17th head coach for the NIU men’s wrestling team, hired by athletic director Jeff Compher after former coach Dave Grant retired.

Ludwig has been instrumental in bringing in top talent to NIU since 2005 and his experience under Grant made him the clear choice for the job.

“We felt pretty comfortable with Ryan,” Grant said. “He did an outstanding job as an assistant. He’s an outstanding individual. He will go the extra mile. A great coach with great integrity.”

After six seasons as a Huskie assistant coach to Grant, Ludwig now has an opportunity to show what he can do as the head coach.

“It will be a new beginning, a new chapter in Huskie wrestling,” said Ludwig. “Our immediate goal is to improve in the MAC, have a winning record and produce some MAC All Americans. Last year we experienced some growing pains, but eventually we hope to compete for a title on a yearly basis.”

Ludwig is known for his intensity, and has earned a reputation as a blue chip recruiter, both of which should prove to be invaluable over time. The most difficult challenge for Ludwig may be replacing the legacy of Grant, who leaves after a 15-year career.

Ludwig doesn’t seem fazed by the pressure though, focusing more on ensuring solidarity, and bringing NCAA hardware back to DeKalb.

“I wouldn’t call it pressure, I would call it extreme motivation to do well,” said Ludwig. “We tell all our wrestlers to live the championship lifestyle, and to believe in their training. We want to immerse ourselves in our goal to be national champions,” said Ludwig.

Redshirt senior Brad Dieckhaus is looking forward to having Ludwig as his new head coach for his final season.

“I’m ecstatic to have him as my coach. He is both physically and mentally positive and has the right attitude,” Dieckhaus said. “He knows the ins and outs of wrestling and he reminds the team everyday of our goals. I’m super excited to start the season,” Dieckhaus said.
