Sycamore Public Library increase Spanish language materials for children with new grant

Sycamore | The Sycamore Public Library, 103 E. State St. received a grant to fund the translation of the library’s materials.
Mary Anderson, head of youth services at Sycamore Public Library, said the translated materials will include instructions for getting a library card.
“We’re trying to encourage Spanish speakers to use the library.” Anderson said.
The library celebrated the grant received last April with their Dia de los Niños-Dia de los Libros: Children’s Day-Book Day event.
The library held a number of activities, Saturday in honor of Dia de los Niños, Children’s Day, including Mariachi music and traditional dancing. Both were supplied by Conexion Comunidad, a Hispanic outreach group.
“We try to build a bridge between Spanish and English-speaking communities,” said Kristina Garcia, president of the board of directors for Conexion Comunidad.
Garcia said they try to introduce kids to music, Mariachi and dance.
“We try to get parents and kids involved in the community,” Garcia said.
There were also several volunteers from the NIU community present at Saturday’s event.
“We’re trying to get involved in the Hispanic community,” said freshman NIU student Juan Gamon. Anderson said the grant was written for Saturday’s event, their first annual celebration, so it is possible that the library will hold a similar event next year.
